Eight Great Tech Tools for Home Design Enthusiasts
Want to know what apps and online resources kitchen and bath pros use when designing and selecting products for spectacular spaces?
Designers discussed their favorite tech tools last Wednesday during the KBTribeChat on Twitter (@kbtribechat /#kbtribechat) and repeatedly shared love for:
Cultivate: An online resource for kitchen inspiration by Williams-Sonoma, Inc. The site features kitchen photos from designers, architects and manufacturers as well as great articles on kitchen trends and remodeling know-how.
Evernote: Makes it easy to remember things big and small from your everyday life using your computer, phone, tablet and the web.
Houzz: An online community of home and landscape design enthusiasts from around the world. Design professionals showcase their portfolios and products, while homeowners add favorite images to “ideabooks,” find local resources and network with other Houzz members. In addition, the site provides articles on interior and exterior home design. (Formica Group was awarded a “Best of Houzz” award in 2012 for having one of the most popular collections of images on the site.)
MyMeasures: An app that allows you to store and add detailed measurements to images, among other things.
Olioboard: A virtual mood board that allows designers and home décor lovers to create 2D and 3D room designs using real products from their favorite brands. Olioboard also allows users to chat with one another and compete in design challenges.
Pinterest: A favorite among pros and consumers alike, Pinterest is a virtual pinboard that allows you to “pin” and share “all the beautiful things you find on the web,” according to the site. You also can browse and comment on pinboards created by other Pinterest members. Formica Group has even jumped into the scene — you can find our vintage Formica advertisements and laminate and solid surfacing images at http://pinterest.com/formicagroup/.
SketchUp: A free 3D sketching software for the conceptual phase of design, from creating landscapes, building exteriors, room layouts and furniture to cars, spaceships and anything else you can imagine. The powerful modeling, presentation and file exchange tools help designers (and those just having fun) find, visualize and specify product quickly — including Formica® Brand Products such as solid surface and laminate countertops.
Skitch: A free app that allows you to create original sketches or mark up existing photos, screenshots, maps and more … then share them with with others. Skitch is part of the Evernote family.
